Photographing Kids!

Want to take better pics of your kids at home? Want to know some top tips from our best photographers - Jonelle and Jane.

Jonelle says her best tip is to get on the same level as the kids... even if it means getting on the ground! "Getting that really great shot looking straight at your precious little one is my favourite angle" says Jonelle. A lot of the times at home we are so used to taking photos from a standing level, looking down at your kids (probably with your iPhone), so getting down onto the same level as the kids gives a different look to what we normally see.

"Look for the best light!" says Jane. Instead of standing right in the sun, which is very harsh and not very flattering look for a shady spot in the garden and make sure there isnt a bright light behind your kids. Perhaps position your kids inside, near an open window. The soft light will create beautiful shadows around their faces but still give you enough light to make sure your shots are in focus.

Bonus Top Tip!!

Jane and Jonelle both say that the thing they always make sure they do: is have a great time at the shoot with the kids. The best way to do that is to get the kids talking about things they love! 'Ask them to talk and think about things that make them happy, like their favourite person (mum) and their family animals'. When getting the kids to smile at the camera try getting the kids to say something other than 'cheeeeeeeese'.  Some of Jonelle and Jane's favourites are: 'Love mummy'  and 'Nanna's knickers' These sayings instantly provoke feelings (love, laughter) and then you capture their reaction to what they said. Most times they are cracking up laughing so much, you get 3 or 4 shots in a row!

Belliot Family 💛

The Belliot family came for a extremely fun and lively shoot 😊 Nature had served up gorgeous weather allowing for some truly stunning photos of this beautiful family. Each member is full of so much individual personality, but they all definitely share a strong love and connection for each other.

Sergio and Iris are originally from Suriname, which is located north of Brazil in South America where they apparently speak Dutch, so throughout the shoot we learnt a few Dutch words 😆. Both currently are working but both are fantastic parents who find the balance between work and family life, just coming back from a trip down south with many fun stories being told of their adventures.

Zara is only 9 years old but definitely one of the smartest 9 year olds I've ever met, full of knowledge and maturity she was describing her great successes both academically and in her love for gymnastics. She would happily sit and have sophisticated conversations with her gorgeous accent (such a mix of different accents from places they've lived) and chat with adults.

Alex is an outdoors man at the age of 2, absolutely adoring anything that has a heart beat, running through the outdoor studio searching for all the surrounding birds. He seems to be forever full of energy making for some gorgeous photos of him imitating a dinosaur 😊

Queeny the dog is just that, an absolute queen, getting lots of love and attention from all the family.

What made the shoot even sweeter was that Iris brought her parents Marcelien and Mike along for some gorgeous photos that will be treasured forever.

Thanks so much Belliot family for allowing us to photograph this beautiful time in your lives so you can remember it forever. It was a true honour 😊

Leighanne, Scott and Poppy

Right from the moment Leighanne, Scott and of course Poppy walked into the studio, we knew it was going to be a fantastic shoot. They are such a sweet, well mannered and polite couple, with an abundance of love clearly evident between them, and definitely a love for Poppy, which Tom the assistant also developed 😊 becoming best friends by the end of the shoot. They for sure also know how to dress well, with Scott's blue blazer complimenting the gorgeous greens of the 5 acre outdoor studio perfectly and Leighanne's floral dress popping beautifully in the golden summer's light and we can't forget Poppy's red collar matching his gorgeous black coat.

Leighanne and Scott are such a cute couple, who genuinely enjoy each others presence. These two love birds met each other while Scott was over in Queensland for work with the defence force, coming back to Western Australia, Leighanne followed and moved over because of her love for Scott. Scott is still working for the defence force after 8 years, with Leighanne studying. Scott loves online gaming and Leighanne's appreciation for books made for an awesome shot highlighting each of their personality as they sit in our outdoor Perth studio (3rd image).

Poppy is a Kelpie cross Border Collie filled with energy. If there were two words to describe Poppy's passions, they would be, balls and bubbles. Poppy had such a lovely temperament and totally ball fixated. We have never quite seen a dog so excited about bubbles, absolutely attacking the bubbles as they were blown, making for a fantastic photo in the studio.

It was so lovely meeting these three and we truly hope Scott and Leighanne enjoy the photos 😊

The Beautiful Rhodes Family

What a cute and loving little family! Sean and Jaclyn should be very proud of their two gorgeous kids with Henry and Charlotte having such a gorgeous brotherly-sisterly relationship.

Henry's smile just screams cheeky. Henry was such a delight to photograph exploring our 5 acre outdoor studio in his cute little outfit. It was evident he was absolutely in his element in the bush-land, with Jaclyn describing to us that at the age of 3 he has a clear love for gardening, digging holes and even mowing the lawn. Sean and Henry clearly have that father and son bond, with them both sharing a love for fishing, so we made sure that they brought in the fishing rods, making for some fantastic photos. Henry even brought along his favourite squid to hook on his fishing line 😊

Charlotte is starting to discover all the fun to be had in life, enjoying time with her brother, having fun sitting in the grass and following Henry on the bike.

Jaclyn did absolutely great with outfit colours, making for some gorgeous photos. It was an absolute pleasure and  joy to photograph such a loving family 😊

Glenda 😊

Glenda booked in for her shoot right at the end of Winter at Premier Studio in Perth. On our first booking call with Glenda we found out so many great things about this vivacious, well travelled and delightful woman.

I had the pleasure of shooting her portrait and I couldnt wait to see what Glenda had bought along to her shoot. Glenda's booking consultant had already gone over so many great options for us to shoot. First of all- Glenda is a grandmother- so we wanted to show her love of reading to her grandkids with some teddies and special hand-puppets that she has collected over the years to entertain the kids. Glenda also makes patchwork quilts! So I knew we had to incorporate one of her designs into the shots too!

I found out that Glenda has travelled most of the world! We used the umbrella and scarf that Glenda had picked up on her travels to show places she has been, while showcasing the beautiful Australian bushland on our 5 acres that home is where the heart is for her, in Australia.

Even though Glenda loves travelling, she is also a marriage celebrant. You can see her love for meeting couples every weekend and helping them embark on their journey of marriage. If you need a marriage celebrant, check her out here: https://www.facebook.com/glendacivilcelebrant/

The Brookes Family

What a gorgeous and loving family! It was extremely evident that the Brookes family is built on a genuine love for each other, making the whole shoot that much more easy, enjoyable and memorable. Because of this great love, we managed to capture some truly spectacular photos, allowing them to treasure and remember this wonderful time in their lives forever.

Kirsten absolutely did perfect with outfit choice to go with the warm summer light that is starting to shine, even bringing an adorable head band to match little Lola's beautiful summer outfit. It was obvious that Kirsten loved them all, but the mother daughter bond of 4 month old Lola is definitely starting to shine, making for a gorgeous photo of the connection between them.

It is clear that Neil is extremely proud of his kids, being extremely hands on and connecting with each of their interests. Ryan being the oldest of the boys doesn't take that role lightly, acting a lot more mature and grown up then most boys aged ten, possessing all the responsible big brother traits, even looking after and carrying Lola throughout the shoot. Ryan was in his element at our 5 acre outdoor Perth studio, with him loving the Australian Bush-land. 8 year old Fletcher was extremely easy to photograph showing off his impressive skateboarding ability to us all. Stirling being the youngest of the boys loves his older brothers, following their footsteps everywhere, acting very grown up for his age. Stirling is so full of character, especially when he discovered our huge range of ride on car and bike props, he came alive, riding around the studio. He brought along his favourite ride on fire truck, but as soon as he saw our red old truck he was so excited. This bond between all the kids made for some terrific photos, with bubbles and the swing capturing all their attention. Thank you Kirsten and Neil, you are a gorgeous couple with a stunning family making for such a great family photo-shoot, we hope you truly enjoy your new prints.

The Lovely Allyson and Trevor Share The Secret to a Strong Relationship

It was so lovely having Allyson and Trevor come in for a couple shoot. These two made it extremely evident that they loved each other, just being in their presence we could feel the love between them, being filled with joy seeing two people who are truly soulmates. Having their photos taken here at Premier 11 years ago, Allyson tried to book a family shoot although with children living here, there and everywhere, they came to realise that may be a romantic couple shoot at our Perth 5 acre outdoor studio is just what they needed after almost 33 years of marriage, and thank goodness they did! This was a fantastic portrait session, not only being sweet and romantic but also fun- popping a bottle of wine open in our lovely grass and snuggling on the bed of the old truck. For the fun of it we even got a little bit cheesy, with Trevor and Allyson feeding each other grapes as they lay laughing together.

Trevor is a farmer but also an absolute romantic, making cheeky jokes, flattering and ultimately loving Allyson. I distinctly remember him picking daisies and lilies for his wife and most importantly striking a cheeky pose with them 😊. Like Trevor, Allyson loves enjoying a glass of wine, while also keeping active and volunteering within the community.

These two made for an extremely gorgeous atmosphere as they slow danced with each other around in the gorgeous afternoon light. Witnessing such a strong and healthy relationship, we had to ask for their secret to a lasting relationship, and they laid it out simply: love, friendship and most importantly you must be able to always trust each other.

Thank you Allyson and Trevor for making it such an enjoyable and feel good shoot, we felt so honoured and privileged to photograph and meet you, hope you enjoy your new wall-art 😊

The gorgeous Mark and Rochelle 💛

Let me just say wow!! It was so great meeting Mark and Rochelle. What an absolutely gorgeous couple.  Both Rochelle and Mark are really into their fitness and are currently training for a competition. They say the couples that train together stay together and you can really see it,  the shots in our indoor studio are amazing. Rochelle has lost a massive 30kg through her dedication and training.

What made this shoot even more fairy tale like was that Mark (with a glass of champaign) got down one knee and PROPOSED!! Such a magical experience, and we captured it all on our outdoor 5 acres in Perth. Congratulations Mark and Rochelle. We wish you the very best for your future together.

Then and Now

I have seen so many clients recently that have been through to us a few years ago and some many years ago..! The best thing about having a family business that has spanned 3 generations is that you get to see the 'old' clients and how the kids have grown up! So many families that were photographed by my mum when the kids were 2 or 3 are now coming back- as the kids are 13 and 14, or they have their own kids now. I also LOVE seeing the pictures that are still up on their walls from all that time ago. They all say to me that the photos are now priceless and even though it seemed like they were spending alot at the time- they would do it all again just to have those precious memories of their babies that are now all grown up. The one thing we really can't get back is time.

Naomi (the above photos) came through with her family over 10 years ago (and has been twice since too) but now she has her own little boy. We captured some gorgeous photos of the two of them together, and now her son will have these photos to treasure when he grows up.

If you have been to us before and are thinking about another shoot then ask about our VIP Client (Very Important Past Client) special. We would love to see you again and your new family, new kid or just grown up kids!

The top photo is my sister and I at Fremantle E-Shed Markets. Taken about 22 years ago, Mum used to shoot there all the time. We used to whisper secrets to and plan all our adventures together. Now that we are both grown up, I still talk to my sister a lot and we do still plan adventures together.
