The Warner Family

A Magical Outdoor Family Photoshoot at Premier Studio (Family, 2 dogs and Groot!)

My passion lies in capturing the natural, candid moments of families, and still capturing a stunning family portrait they would be happy to hang on the wall.
Recently, I had the photographed the Warner Family- the 2 brothers had so much energy and I wanted to capture their connection, incorporate their 2 dogs and still show how energetic they are at this age. What made this experience even more magical was their personal items they brought along for the session.
They told me they wanted to capture candid moments, and incorporate mum’s beloved personal item—Groot, get a GREAT family shot for the wall and show how much fun the boys have together.

Embracing the Natural Light and Outdoors

One of the most wonderful aspects of this family photoshoot was the choice to immerse ourselves in the beauty of nature. The lush greenery, majestic trees, and gentle breeze created a captivating backdrop for their portraits. When photographing families outdoors, it's essential to utilize the natural sunlight to enhance the warmth and vibrancy of the images. Positioning the family in areas where the light is soft and flattering can make a significant difference in the overall mood and atmosphere of the photographs. I use the sun as a ‘backlight’ and then use either fill flash or a reflector to light the clients from the front.

Candid Moments

My goal is to capture genuine emotions and connections for each family. I believe the magic lies in those unscripted, candid moments. For this photoshoot, I encouraged the family to interact, but still gave some guidance to get them started… then just let their personalities shine through. To capture authentic moments, it's crucial to create a relaxed and comfortable environment where the family can be themselves. I want to avoid stiff poses and if i think someone doesnt look comfortable - we change it up! I always focus on encouraging organic interactions, such as tickling, laughing, or whispering secrets, or running! These fleeting moments of joy bring these photographs to life - you just have to be READY to capture them in camera!

Personal Items - Groot Joins the Fun! (and their 2 Doggies too!)

The family's decision to incorporate their personal item, Groot, added an extra touch of whimsy and personality to the photoshoot. Including the basketball too (what the boys do at this age) made their images more meaningful and captured this time in their lives.

I always encourage every family to bring items that reflect their interests, passions - and of course the family pet or two!

These personal touches not only add depth to the photographs but also provide an opportunity for the family to showcase their unique story. As a photographer, it's important to incorporate these items seamlessly into the narrative, ensuring they enhance rather than distract from the family's connection - this is why we do a phone call with every client and find out about them, and create a few different shot ideas together.

The Magic of Candid (in-between) Moments

To capture these magical moments, I relied on my instincts, remaining attentive to the subtle gestures, glances, and expressions that revealed their deep bond. Patience, observation, and anticipation are key skills for any photographer seeking to capture authentic family connections.

Photography Tips:

Embrace natural light: When photographing families outdoors, harness the power of natural light to create warm and vibrant images. Seek soft and diffused lighting conditions, such as shaded areas (verandah, under the canopy of our massive paperbark trees etc). Use a fill flash (I usually have my flash powered at about 1/64 to 1/128 power. I use a Nikon Speedlight) or if there is enough sun to use a reflector and I have an assistant with me - I will use that.

Encourage candid moments: Rather than focusing on posed shots, create a relaxed and comfortable environment for the family to interact naturally. Encouraging client to talk to each other - I give them a topic to get them started… Like tell me who is the funniest in the family..? Then capturing the playfulness, laughter, and genuine connections flows from there.

Incorporate personal items: Bringing items that hold sentimental value or reflect their interests are key! These personal touches can add depth and personality to the photographs, enhancing the family's story, of this time in their lives.

Stay attentive and patient: Observe and anticipate genuine moments of connection within the family. Be ready to capture those moments - (fast camera know-how for setting is my super-power!)
